Claire Zeisler American, 19031991 Private Affair I 1986 Hemp, macramé (multiple chain knots), twisted and wrapped cords; cut fringe ht.: 304.8 cm Marion and Samuel Klasstorner Endowment, 1986.1050 © 1994 Estate of Claire Zeisler Fiber art is made of the stringy substance that comes from cotton, hemp, and other plants. Zeisler was a sculptor who handled fiber as other sculptors handle wood, metal, or stone. Using tightly knotted and wrapped strands of natural hemp she created the cascading forms of Private Affair I. Although this sculpture looks as if it stands up by itself, Zeisler used a metal core in the middle. What do the cascading forms remind you of?
